Our ongoing activities include the design of small, lightweight, easy-to-disassemble devices, and the elimination and reduction of harmful substances from products.
Elimination and reduction of harmful substances from products
We use lead-free cables and chromium-free steel sheets to reduce the release of lead and chromium, which are known to have a negative impact on human health. We use materials that are free of halogen-based flame retardants in manufacturing resin gears, as they have a risk of releasing dioxins when burned. We have eliminated CFCs, HCFCs, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and carbon tetrachloride from our manufacturing processes, which are specified in the Montreal Protocol as substances that can deplete the ozone layer and should be totally prohibited from use. Since November 2003, we have been substituting products that conform to the RoHS Directive*.
